Prerequisites are either reading the first three chapters of the Pattern book or watching our recorded Pattern System Level 1 Masterclasses (included with your membership!)

With the Pattern System you learn to …
To get you ready for this:
Masterclass Level 1, read up to CHapter 3 in the book.
You will learn” soloing, triads all over the fretboard, how to make your fills shine….
As a bassist, I have toured/played/recorded with a variety of rock, Jazz, and funk bands, I have worked with some incredible producers (Keith Olsen) and musicians (Paul Hanson, Muriel Anderson) and I toured Brazil with Stu Hamm as a duo.
As a bass teacher, I have taught at London Bass Day, Gerald Veasley’s Bass Boot Camp, SBL, Truefire, notreble… I even ran my own music school for a few years before gigs took me back on the road.
One thing to know about me is that I teach because I am absolutely fascinated with the learning process. And I am obsessed with helping others realize their musical potential.
When I started playing bass, I excelled very quickly because I had an amazing teacher who taught me using a powerful method. This method transformed my playing so quickly that I passed a bunch of high-level university auditions and even tested out of entire classes at university even though I had been playing for only a very short time.
That’s what, many years later turned into one of my books, co-written with Wolf Wein, called “The Pattern System for the Bass Player”. I created entire systems of learning based on some of these ideas and wrote books and created courses together with Wolf. Our bass books have sold over 30,000 copies and garnered rave reviews.
I started teaching online in 2009 and have embraced technology as a powerful learning tool since then, never losing sight of the importance of providing feedback and personalized guidance to learners.
I also utilize the power of learning in groups: our first cohort with volunteer coaches ran in 2018, and Masterclasses started in 2020.

1. You will learn how to practice effectively
It’s not the quantity of practice that matters most, but the quality.
Practicing does not just mean repetition and rote learning for hours on end hoping for the best. Rather, Ari leads you through an effective and focused session on the bass in each session and teaches you the art of effective practicing in a distraction-free and structured zone.
2. Learn your favorite bass lines and go beyond the bass line
It is very easy these days to grab TAB off youtube and simply follow along. With Ari, however, learning the (parts of the) song is more like a means to a bigger end, namely to use these bass lines as vehicles for musical growth, as springboards for learning about theory, rhythm, technique. This way of learning brings all these foundational skills to life as they start to make sense in their actual musical context.
3. Theory and Improv, Groove and Technique
Ari will analyze the theory and rhythms behind the song with you and examine various technical challenges. She makes specific drills out of all these elements that have you learning the song in a while new depth.
Why and how exactly is this bass line working? How can you reliably give it that same feel? What happens if we change details of phrasing or the perception of the subdivision? Or what about reharmonizing sections?
4. New skills on your creative shelf
Ari has developed signature drills that enable you to slowly develop and nurture your personal creativity. Exercises like her Reduction, Overlays or drills using rhythmic templates open enough guardrails to assure it “sounds like you know what you are doing” while opening up creative space for you to explore at the same time.
5. Whether you practice along live or in the archives, you will always spend a productive, well-rounded session on the bass you can feel great about!
No more poking about various courses that are not clear on what to work on and how to work on it. Contrary to what many believe, music learning is not linear. It requires a lot of smart repetition, skillful variation and paying attention to various details. The drills Ari does with you are the drills that help you dig deep to find your musical voice. This is high level rapid results practice and it works for players of all levels.
After a quick warmup of fingers, body, ears and mind, Ari leads you through a few Finger Kung Fu drills (those are her technique exercises). They are typically related to a challenging bass line or a theme of the month, addressing common technical hurdles of speed and agility. Using her PORA method, she helps you focus.
Then, Ari works some theory concept through the fretboard, be it inspired by a song, a concept or a creative idea you can use for fills.
Then, Ari will also apply special groove learning techniques such as her “Reductions” (what makes this groove special?), “Overlays” (how to apply this groove to related situations), “What Ifs” (real-life scenarios from jams and gigs) and other drills that are designed to sharpen your musical instincts and give you confidence.
In EarTraining Mondays, you will practice Ari’s seven favorite paths to train your ear; what’s exciting is that this is eartraining with bass in hand!
Rather than doing ear training via isolated identification of intervals and chords such as apps have you do, Ari puts it into musical and bass specific contexts.
She shows you what to listen for, how to listen for detail and how to listen for “the gist of it”. Many drills involve improvisation and backing tracks.
She offers variations for different levels and incorporates rhythms, pitches, chords, scales, melodies. Most interesting is: what is the effect of certain musical sounds and how can you use them creatively in a bass situation?

that’s it! Even tablets or smartphones work, but computers offer better audio quality. If you have an audio interface and want to go fancy, go for it, but simple works well, too.

In these live sessions you spend a highly productive session each time. This is quality practice over quantity practice.
The best way to support yourself is to make the regular live sessions a staple or watch and re-watch the recordings.
You are welcome and encouraged to practice in addition, but even if you don’t do that and just show up and practice along or simply press play, your learning curve is reliably headed in the right direction!
The kind of practice you do here is so engaging, motivating and fun that you are effortlessly forming a solid habit!
Yes! All of our PDFs have sheet music as well as TAB and chords. Reading is a great skill to have for a musician, and you will practice it in several of our sessions, but if you don’t know it yet, you can follow along using the TAB or imitate in the beginner sessions.
Only if you want to!
When you first enter the meeting, all participants will be automatically muted. Ari and the other teachers present and you play along and can hear her and yourself. Nobody else can hear you unless you hit the unmute button. Ari may ask for volunteers, or you may raise your hand if you have a question or need help.
The EarConfidence Course is excellent for self-study, while the live events provide hands-on training, examples and applications.
Unlike most apps or eartraining programs, that focus on interval identification for ear training, our EarTraining live classes simulate real playing situations! They provide light bulb moments, and creative breakthroughs and give you confidence as a player.
EarTraining is vital training for any musician. And it’s fun, too, as with Ari, you have our favorite tool – the bass – in hand!
It’s marked in the calendar who is teaching. Not all sessions are with Ari. However, all sessions and all content is put together by Ari (sometimes together with her partner Wolf). You get consistent teaching by either Ari herself or carefully trained and qualified teachers.
Courses are dedicated to a particular topic and are for self-study.
Practice events are well-rounded practice sessions, either one-offs, or mini-series centered around a song or particular topic.
Their main purpose is to ensure you get a well-rounded practice session that draws from all of Ari’s methods.
Sessions with Ari are recorded and archived.
Sessions with Ari-trained teachers (especially the ones that provide additional training on a session that Ari already presented and that you will find in the archives) are not always included in the archives.
Sometimes you simply “had to be there” to receive personal support!
With literally hundreds of hours of archived live sessions you will not run out of practice sessions anytime soon!
