Western Swing on Bass

I’ve been playing in a Western Swing band lately, and it’s rewiring something in my ear.

On paper it’s familiar: rhythm changes lookalikes, 12-bar blues, 8-bar blues, strong ii–V–I bones.

But here’s where it gets interesting playing Western Swing on bass — a few things that make it genuinely its own world:

1. Two-feel drop under the vocals. Open it up during the solos, then the bass drops back to roots-and-five (or variations). Not because it’s simple — because it breathes.

2. Passing chords. Lots of inversions and delightful chromatic passing diminished chords. Everywhere. #IVdim into the V, Idim into the I. Mix it with the country flair, and it’s a gem!

3. Augmented chords as dominant color. The V+7 gets used boldly, not as a substitute — as the actual sound of tension, often just sitting at the end of a phrase.

4. The solos – country and jazz. Lines that could sound at home on a bebop record (or maybe pre-bop), played by someone in a western shirt over a swing or a shuffle. It’s disorienting in the best way.

5. Lovely counter-harmony lines. The guitar often inverts in the lowest voicing to create cool voice leading lines. I can go with that or against that, one going from the top down, one ascending. Counterpoint of old with a swing!

What it’s doing to my bass playing: I’m copying and learning from everyone. Violin lines, guitar licks, steel guitar glisses, melodies — I’m learning from all of it and finding out how that translates to the bass. It’s a blast!

⚡️ Practice Spark:

Here is a Bob Wills tune for you, courtesy of our fearless bandleader Rick Jobe who arranged the contrasting motion in the bass (top A/B) and the Eldon style guitar (bottom A/B). I included the iRealPro file as well if you want to play along. Thanks for allowing me to use your chart, Rick, and your comments. Yes, this style is strangely addictive as you say!

Downloadable iRealPro file

Note: Unzip the attached file and double-click it. If you have iRealPro installed, it will ask you to open inside your iRealPro program. Say yes and it will go straight in.
