This system aligns perfectly with Ari and Wolfβs other courses and systems, be it the Rhythm Matrix or the Pattern System. All systems go hand in hand and reinforce each other.Β
This reading method will build your confidence and skills to navigate the fretboard with ease. Whether youβre aiming to enhance your reading fluency or prepare you for the Pattern System, this approach sets you up for smooth, musical playing across the fingerboard.
No need to have mastered the theory and no need to have mastered the pattern system or rhythm matrix.
All these systems reinforce each other. Suitable for low intermediate and up.Β For this class, you need to know your intervals, that’s it!
Ari's Reading System
π No more “translating notes into note names” and then trying to “find the note name on the fretboard” – which is a terribly round-about way to learn reading.Β
π Instead, useΒ the shape-basedΒ theory knowledge you gleaned from Ari’s Theory teachings and put them into action!Β
π€© AriβsΒ innovative systemΒ transforms the reading process into anΒ intuitive and enjoyable experience, allowing you to read fluentlyΒ without constantly glancing at the fretboard.
ByΒ integrating reading directly with your understanding of the fretboard, this method makes reading musicΒ feel natural and effortlessΒ and achieves more than just reading proficiency: it reinforces fretboard knowledge and the theory you are learning.Β

FAQs
Who is Ariβs Reading System for?
For bass players who want to finally learn to read music in a practical, non-intimidating way. Itβs designed for players of all styles who want to make reading part of their musicianship using just five shapes and the interval reading method.
Do I need to know how to read before starting?
No. The course starts at the very beginning and teaches notation step by step. Youβll learn what to focus on and how to connect what you see on paper to what you play on the bass.
What makes this different from standard reading books?
Itβs built for bass players. Youβll learn to read in bass-friendly ranges and patterns, not abstract exercises. Every concept is tied to real grooves, riffs and musical examples.
What will I learn in this course?
Youβll learn rhythm reading, note positions, rests, ties, and how to interpret articulations and dynamics. Youβll also learn how to read across the neck and how to count confidently in different meters.
How is the course structured?
Step-by-step lessons with video explanations, exercises, play-alongs, and written examples. Youβll practice reading in context so that every new skill immediately connects to real music.
Do I need to know theory?
No. Youβll pick up enough theory as you go. If you already know some, it will deepen your understanding of what youβre reading.
How much time should I set aside each week?
Plan for 20 to 30 minutes per day, five days a week. Consistency builds fluency much faster than cramming.
Does this include live support?
The course is self-paced. If you want structured deadlines and personalized feedback, you can join a 12-week Cohort that includes live meetings and homework support.
How long do I keep access?
You get lifetime access to the course and materials. If you join a Cohort, live meeting recordings are available for the duration of the cohort.
Do I need to print anything?
You can view all materials on screen, but printed notation pages can help. Many students like to annotate with pencil as they go.
