Steal my Kisses (AKA: Steal my Tenths!)

Steal my Kisses and tenths

Always have to…

“Steal My Kisses” by Ben Harper features an inspiring bass line using tenths by the awesome Juan Nelson (RIP 🕯️).

Tenths are just 3rds above the octave, but that large interval instantly creates more drama than a simple root-third phrase. It’s a great device to have on your creative shelf, so let’s check how Juan uses it and see how we can use the same idea over other chord progressions.

Drills for Fills

Talking Technique #22 - Drills for Fills

Playing fills is fun. These scalar drills sound great and give you great ammunition for fills. And they are a great technique drill, too!

After posting this session a reader requested applications of these drills in actual fills over chord progressions. You can find this episode on applications of the fills drills over chords here.

In my book The Pattern System for the Bass Player, co-written with Wolf Wein, we expand on these types of studies with what we call “Scalar Studies”.
